  • The Raccolta or Collection of Indulgenced Prayers & Good Works, translated by Ambrose St John of the Oratory of St Philip Neri, Birmingham (London: Burns & Oates; New York, Chicago, Cincinnati Benziger Bros, 1910). With approbation from the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith and the Archbishop of Westminster. May be downloaded in PDF format through the Saints’ Books index. May also be read online or downloaded in various formats (PDF, EPUB, Kindle, Daisy, Full Text DjVu) at Internet Archive and Open Library (Digitizing sponsor: MSN, Book contributor: Kelly Library, University of Toronto).

The Raccolta is a veritable encyclopedia of Catholic prayers, devotions, and holy works. There are prayers in adoration of God like the Trisagion, various acts of thanksgiving and homage to God, devotions meditating on the Passion of Christ, devotions before the Blessed Sacrament, prayers for a happy death, prayers for the chastity of priests (needful always, for they are Satan’s foremost enemies and choicest targets), various Rosaries and Novenas, prayers for students, prayers for the dying, prayers for the conversion of unbelievers (including prayers for the conversion of Scandinavia and of the Dutch). Among the holy works commended for Christians are almsgiving, visiting the sick in hospitals, and (perhaps to the surprise of our anti-Catholic brethren) pious reading of the Gospel.

The table of contents provides a glimpse of the scope of the Raccolta:

We wholeheartedly recommend this work, mindful that it is through prayer the Christian is brought closer to the mind and heart of Christ our divine Lord, Who commanded us to pray with trust and humility, always aware of our dependence on God, our unworthiness of His mercy, and the infinite bounty of His love. It is His Spirit Who moves us to prayer, by which, in the nourishment of the sacraments, He sustains us to live and die in the communion of God through Christ in His Church.
